Mariposa Matte Lip Stain Review

Mariposa Matte Lip Stain Reviewtldr: these are matte, waterproof and stay put but feel tacky once applied on the lips and not very comfortable

For those of you not familiar with Mariposa, it's an in-house makeup brand at Dollarama (a dollar store found across eastern Canada). Today, I saw Mariposa's new liquid lipsticks and picked up two shades for $1.50 each. Most of the shades in store were pinks, mauves, reds, and I saw a single, adventurous bright purple (shade: “Ms. Paris”).

Lollipop in its packaging

I purchased Lollipop (medium pink-red) and Dreamer (brown-red). They come in 8ml tubes with doe-foot applicators. With the applicator it came with, I was able to apply the lipstick cleanly without the help of a lip brush. The pigmentation is great and it only took one coat for opaque coverage. I also immediately noticed the scent – it smells like a coconut tart to me. I normally hate artificially scented coconut, but this doesn’t veer into sunscreen territory. When it dries completely, it gives a fully matte finish. They're called matte lip stains but to be honest, they don't feel like a traditional stain. Instead, they feel like liquid lipsticks.

Immediately after application, I noticed that these don’t wear comfortably on the lips. If you’ve ever used the MeNow liquid lipsticks sold on eBay and other online Chinese vendors – this is exactly how it feels. You can feel that you’re wearing a product, and it doesn’t feel nice. Another similarity to the MeNow lipsticks is that it leaves a tacky feeling, which never really goes away, i.e. if you press your lips together, it’ll stick together. When it comes time to remove these, you'll need an oil-based cleanser and you're going have to scrub hard because these are not easy at all to remove.

These don't budget under water. You're really going have to scrub with an oil-based cleanser.

Overall, if you’re in the market for budget liquid lipsticks, these are a great option to play with. I don’t think these will make it into my daily rotation because I’m not a fan of how they feel, but these are fantastic in every other aspect, especially for the price.

VERDICT: B+

Essie: Passport to Happiness

Passport to Happiness by Essie Here are a couple of nail swatches of Essie's Passport to Happiness from the Bridal 2016 collection (Mrs. Always Right). This colour is a mint green with shimmer that's great for spring. The colour is reminiscent of a Tiffany Blue, but cooler-leaning and more green.

It takes two coats to reach full opacity and is pictured here with a basecoat, two coats of polish and a topcoat. The photos were taken on the third day of wear, and I'll update this post with wear time next week.

Mini Mint Palette Review

Over the past two years, I've accumulated a staggering number of loose-powder samples that I have trouble using. I decided that pressing them and having them organized in nice palettes would motivate me to start using them more. After considering the options (Mini Mint, Book of Shadows or Z-palettes), I ordered two palettes from Mini Mint on Dec 18. I contacted the shop owner via Etsy to ask if she could hold my order until she released more palettes, and she offered the option of a reserved listing (i.e. I pick the front cover design and size).

Here's a time line of the process:

The palettes arrived in a small cardboard box secured with protective cushioning. Each palette was individually wrapped with a plastic sleeve and a colour-coordinated paper with the shop's branding. The paper-phile in me was delighted at these details.

Also in the package were a sheet of stickers for labelling your pans, a pair of falsies and a reward card for a "buy ten get one free" deal. The big sheet of stickers came with the 4x6 palette.

I ordered three 4x4 everyday ($7 USD) and a 4x6 storage palettes ($10 USD) to kick start my personal project of pressing my loose indie make up. The top two of were purchased as is in the shop and bottom two were reserved listings.

Here some more photos individually:

4x4 leaves with gold foil - I really love the gold detailing on this one

4x6 watercolour flowers and bird

4x4 roses on wood

The palettes all have different designs on the interior of the lid and a magnetic closure.

I'm thoroughly impressed with the quality of these palettes. They feel professionally made and I appreciate the assortment of designs offered by Mini Mint. They are light but feel sturdy in the hand. The 4x4 holds nine 26mm pans with room left over to fit a mini brush. With these tin pans purchased from TheBodyNeeds, they stick on to the Mini Mint palettes (they're magnetized) with no sliding around whatsoever. The 4x6 holds fifteen 26mm pans and I plan to use that one to store my eye shadows.

I'm very happy with my purchases and will definitely be a repeat customer (given that first I fill up my current palettes). Now it does take some patience stalking the store for designs you like but I think it's well worth the wait. You can see previews of the palette designs on Facebook and announcements are made every time a new batch of palettes is released.

Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Mini Mint, which provided everything I ask for buying online and more: an excellent product, responsive CS, fast turnaround time to ship and good packaging. This has probably been my favourite indie purchase of 2015. If you're looking for cute, colourful palettes to store your pressed pigments I highly recommend Mini Mint.

Darling Clandestine for Beginners

Darling Clandestine has a reputation of making "weird" perfumes. I have to admit, when I first navigated her selection, I was pretty uninterested in any of the perfumes because they didn't strike me as anything I would wear.

Boy, that took a totally different turn. I've made two purchases and I'm already planning my third.

The point of this post is to introduce you to some DC perfumes that are "beginner friendly", because I for one, am a wuss and doesn't like to venture into unsafe perfume territory. I like things that smell pretty and well, more or less like what perfume smells like. In the realm of indie perfume, the boundaries of what perfume can smell like are stretched beyond the catalog of scents I'd personally wear. For example, DC has a perfume that smells reptilian (Dewlap Valentine, if you're interested).

Recently, Evonne, the owner of DC added a very helpful "boss level" guide to her perfumes, ranging from passable as perfume to “omg why do you smell like you’ve been rolling in stars and destiny and gasoline". Not gonna lie, I might just pick up something with a boss level of 10 so I can smell like the galaxy even if I just wear it to bed. Below, you'll find six scents I've sampled that are quite safe if you're just starting out with indie perfumes.

Bitsy vials @ $12 USD for three

Kendraberry: This is a bright, effervescent honeysuckle spritzer, tempered with fresh fruits and juniper and green tea and amber and ozone.
Kendraberry hit me with a burst of something bright and vast. This reminds me of a cold, pristine blanket of snow against a bright, morning sky. I like it! It's pretty, yet it doesn't evoke the headiness that comes with commercial perfumes.

Morderteile Kelah: Notes of amber, hyacinth, milk and strawberry jam.
This doesn't smell like fresh strawberries, but I'm not sure why I expected that it would, because it's strawberry jam in here. This smells very warm and sweet with a little spice...like you're in a cozy little hut by the fireplace and you've put your nose up a bottle of strawberry jam.

Serpentina: Green tea with a smoky opium bite
I'm struck with the same "brightness" I smell from Kendraberry on cold sniff. On my skin, it smells like a chilled and heavily sweetened green tea scent. Interestingly, the first time I smelled Serpentina the first time after my package arrived, it was all smokiness. I've read that fragrance oils need to settle after being transported, and I'm happy to say that when I tried it two days later, it smelled completely different. I get very little of the smokiness now, and only towards the end of its wear time. I really like this one, and want a full size. I have no idea what opium smells like so I can't comment on that note.

Small Saga: With notes of green figs and tea and cream and apricot wine, this scent opens deceptively sweet and creamy but then unfolds its complex layers and settles in a mellow, woody finish
This smells like creamy, creamy greenness. I've only eaten figs twice in my life (the texture grosses me out), but I do pick up the fig from this scent. I love it enough to buy a full size of this too. I've paired this with Alkemia Apothecary's Carmen 7 and it makes for a wonderfully sweet, creamy, feminine scent.

Tilt-a-whirl: Bright summer citrus and passionfruit mellowed with sage and other wonders. Juicy and fruity but not too sweet, candy for grownups.
This smells like orange medicine to me. If orange-flavoured cough syrup exists, I imagine this is what it'll smell like. On my skin, it smells like orange tinged with something green and weird (the sage?). Of all the 6 scents, this is the only one I didn't enjoy.

Pistolas:Soft, mellow gardenia and lavender (Abuelita's favorite), with an undercurrent of city sidewalks and just a kiss of tobacco leaf.
Straight up gardenia with a slight, metallic edge. I suspect this is the concrete note. If you like the scent of gardenia, you'll like this one.

My top three are: Small Saga, Serpentina and Kendraberry, probably in that order. I put these babies on in the morning, and can still smell them on me by the end of the day so they have great lasting power.

I also wanted to take a moment to gush about Evonne's customer service. The way she communicates clearly shows how she loves her customers and her job. She writes to each and every one of us like she's writing us a love letter. If you follow the DC page on Facebook, you'll know what I mean. I've corresponded with her via Etsy once about my order and it gave me warm fuzzies.

On an ending note, even if you're a beginner with perfume, there are certainly scents from DC that are very safe and smell good even though they don't smell like traditional perfume. If you're brave, there are plenty of fun choices to pick from.

DC is currently closed until mid-October. When it reopens, I urge you to check out the shop. She makes perfume oils, solids, lip balms and more. I love that she offers mini sizes because 1) miniatures are cute, 2) you can sample scents.

Introductory Post

Hello world :)

About six months ago, I started getting into indie make up/perfume (through Reddit's r/indiemakeupandmore). I'm starting this blog to document this new hobby, and as a way to get myself into writing again. I'll be blogging about mostly make up, with a toss-up of indies and non-indie brands.

The URL of this blog is a pun based on fawn + fantasia. I like baby animals and I like the definition of fantasia - "a free musical composition structured according to the composer's fancy". This will be a blog focused on cosmetics and perfume, not music, but I'm applying the same principals of improvisation.

I've had a LiveJournal account in the past that I've abandoned several years ago, and I hope I can keep faithful to blogging this time around.
